I have a habit of picking up seeds that I find some times in my travels around Florida. But some times I don't know what they are. I pick a seed of this a few years ago and I don't remember what or where I got it. I think it came from Key Largo. Can anyone guess what it might be or better yet know what it is?

I like the fat base.

I like it more ever day.

The below were photos of the plant about a year ago.

Ananas lucidus and Ananas comosus var. erectifolius is the same plant. But how we have a NEW variegated form and its great looking.

A decorative pineapple with colorful miniature fruit. In spite of its size (over three feet tall), it is still considered a rather small species because of its upright habit. A showy species with slender, stiff but spineless leaves of coppery reddish brown and tennis ball sized, bright red fruit.

Culture: needs full sun - part sun
Allow the plant to dry in-between waterings. Fertilize every 4-week with a balanced fertilizer diluted to ½ the strength recommended on the label.

In July of 2009 Ray Lemieux of Tropiflora gave a talk to our Bromeliad Society of Sarasota. If you don't know who he is, he is the one who cares for and does all the hybrid's on Dyckia's and other terrestrials bromeliads at Tropiflora.

Hechtia glauca

This is one of the most succulent of the Hechtia, but is a slow grower.
Leaves thick, fat, recurved and have spiny hooks along the leaf margins.
Leaves get up to 18" across.
Leaves are a yellow-green with a turquoisey cast on them (thin dusting) giving it a bit of blue color in the right light. Drought tolerant, but appreciates water.

I don't have a lot of orchids, but this one I've had for about 20 years, give or take. I don't do anything to it and it flowers every year. It came with me from Illinois (that’s where I'm from originally). It is hanging where it gets sun and rain.

This is one of my favorite succulent plants. I had have it now for about 5 years ( I think, maybe longer).
If you look close you can see a red line, I did this so you can see the spines easier. The leafs are so long and thin the spines are hard to see. It is now about 3.5 feet tall.

Up-Date on Hechtia

Back in 6/16/2010 I bought two Hechtia's from Guy Wrinkle. This is a up-date on those plants.

They came with little or no roots (see photos). I have to say they did not root to fast it had taken months ( good part of a year) for any roots to take place.

One year later Hechtia sp. Chilpancingo Guerrero is still not rooted all that well.

Hechtia sp. Sierra Guingola did much better and is rooted well.
This is what it said on Guy Wrinkle web-site about the plants.

Found only on grey weathered limestone in southern Oaxaca. The red color can be washed out with too much shade and or water. Shade and water helps in getting Hechtia rooted but after this is accomplished give the plant more dun and less water to bring the color back out."

Dyckia choristaminea silver

I picked up this dyckia a few months ago with the tag reading Dyckia choristaminea silver (RC Brazil). ↓

It doesn't look like a Dyckia choristaminea to me the leafs are to fat and to short.

But it does have silver over a redish leaf. Look at the new offsets coming with a nice redish color. ↓

This Dyckia choristaminea I have had for years, notice the leafs. ↓

This one I picked up last year. But it was labeled Dyckia elisabethae. Only time will tell if it is a Dyckia choristaminea or what the tag reads. Who knows it may get larger and start to look like Dyckia elisabethae. ↓

Tropiflora had it's summer sale today so I had to go and see what they had.

It is a Stock Reduction Sale and you never know what they are going to reduce, I'm hoping dyckia.

But no dyckia in the sale. All is not lost I did buy a few dyckia's at full price.

CSSA's 33rd Biennial Convention April 10-15 2009 in Tucson, Arizona

Back in April 2009 my wife and I went to Az. for your 1st cactus and succulent convention.

I am not one for sitting all day listing to speakers talking about plants I don't know or care about, so I only went to one of the talks. I won't say which one but it was boring and way to long.

We went looking for succulents but did not find much in the show and few for sale.
I was thinking and hoping we would find succulents bromeliads we don't see in Fl.
I was wrong.
We didn't stay around the hotel for the Convention that much, we rented a car to go see what we could see.

In the next few days I'll add some photo's of what we found.

Rooting Plumeria Cuttings Using The Egg Method

Anyone ever hear about this method? I just found out about this today, it sound very weird. This is how it works:

First of all ensure that your cutting has had time to callous over at the bottom.
If it a freshly cut cutting leave it to dry for around 7 days.
Fill the bottom of your pot with a well draining compost.

Then this is the weird part, place a whole egg still in the shell on top of the compost followed by another inch of your mix.

Then place in your cutting.
Then fill the pot up with your potting mix.
Then your pot must be kept as warm as possible and given a spray with water every couple of days to increase the humidity.
Bottom heat is an important factor in this method and a heat mat is ideal.
Cuttings using this method have been known to root in as little as 3 weeks and not only is this a faster method but it also produces a lot more roots.
The theory behind this method is that an anaerobic decomposition takes place and the escaping gases from the egg nourish the cutting and help speed up the rooting process.

I don't know if you remove the egg or what. It might be a good way to get those hard to root Hechtia's to root if it does work.

Am I the only one that was not heard of this? Has anyone tried it? Does it work? What happens to the egg?

Green Iguana

The 1st time I heard of Iguana's in Florida was way back in 1975 or some where back then. It was said Iguana's could be found on a small Key somewhere south of Key Largo. It was rare to find them if you could back then but now they seen to be everywhere. I have seen them all the way down to Key West to Bradenton where I live.

With so many Iguana's running around I don't understand why there is so many chickens in Key West (Some 2,000 to 3,000 of these feral chickens inhabit Key West). I would think they could catch at least the hatching. I guess Iguana's don't eat meat and are strictly vegetarian and generally eat leaves, flowers, and fruits.

I'm going to take a few day off and go down to Key West.
I just love that place I don't know why, but I do.

No Dyckia's to find down there.

Just fun in the sun, water and looking at street performers and vendors two hours before sunset at Mallory Square.

And of course a visit to Schooner Wharf Bar ( they have a web-cam - take a look, you might see me http://www.schoonerwharf.com/webcam.htm ) right on the water to watch the boats and people go by.

Walking up and Duval Street looking at all the shops searching for some thing to bring back for the grand children.

I like to look in at Sloppy Joe's but it's to noisy to go in and sit for drink.

But I think the best thing I like is just the drive down looking at all of Florida's wonders.

You never know what your going see in Florida. We have lots of weird people doing a lot of weird things.

Wild life is every where. I don't know much about the birds but I do enjoy watching them.

In the Gulf or the Ocean you might see manatees, dolphins, whales and stingrays. I have, plus all kinds of fish, big and small.

Take a look at all the reptiles you can come across.

Not only two types of alligators (American Alligator and Spectacled Caiman- Introduced) but also a Crocodile (American Crocodile )

Dyckia rariflora

I got Dyckia rariflora from Tropiflora about a year ago and on the tag it also said 'Select'.
I don't why it's a 'Select' clone might be a better red or ??.
I do notice as new pups come up they are green and not as stiff as the mother plant.
It is a good looking plant and is a stoloniferous plant.

UPDATE

This is what Tropiflora has to say about this plant on it's web-page.

"Dyckia rariflora 'Select' Similar to the typical form, with burgundy foliage in a rosette of about 20 leaves, and offsets produced on stolons, but this clone has darker foliage. First introduced by the late Wally Berg."

Ebay got me good this passed weekend.

Their were a few Dyckia's on ebay that I though I needed. So I looked and looked at them all week.

The first plant came up for auction.

It came down to the end the last 30 seconds. I put my bid in, I was out bid did it again put faster not wanting to miss out, but in the end I loss it. The other person needed it more then me and willing to pay more.

Then the second one came up for auction. Same story, I loss

Then the next one. The biding was fast in the last few seconds as my fingers were moving faster on the keyboard this time. Well as far as I can remember my last bid was $48 something, I lost. But when I went to look at how much I loss by. I won. WHAT? And I paid how much? $105.28 I didn't bid that much or did I! I guess in all that fast typing in the last seconds my fingers thought I needed it more then my head did. This thing better make pups like no tomorrow, to get my money back.

I did get that I hope to be a nice Dyckia 'Suppressed Anger' - variegated.

I will update this with photo's of the plants when I get them.

I hope it will look as good as this Dyckia I had seen at Tropiflora last year.
It did not have a label on it.

A word about Bigenerics

On the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies web-site their is a list of Bigenerics which I have listed here. I don't think it's a full list of all Bigenerics that have been made.

Some should not have been done, at least with the plants used as it only created some ugly plants.

I'm not big on most Bigeneric plants but there are a few I do like. I like xDeuterocairnia 'Lenny', xDyckcohnia 'Conrad Morton' or any xeric type plants. I like a few xNeophytum but not all. One of the best is xNeophytum 'Galactic Warrior'.

I only have about 3 Bigenerics but would like to get a few more. The plants I like are hard to come by.
Tropiflora do have and made some but don't like to let them go.

Dyckia choristaminea or is it

Every day on ebay ( and other places) I see more kinds / types of this plants. Where do they come from? Are these Dyckia choristaminea hyb.'s or are they new varieties their plants are coming up with. How does that happen? I guess some people are lucky getting their plants to produce something a little different.

I have bought a plant labeled with a name I did not know but they turned out to be Dyckia choristaminea. One of them was Dyckia elisabethae, it was a small plant then I got it and thought it was going to look some what different as it grows up. It didn't, it got a little bigger then flowered just like choristaminea. Then I got a Dyckia choristaminea silver it also a small plant but as it gets a little bigger it stating to look like some thing else. Oh well they are nice looking plants just the same.

Dyckia rariflora select came from Tropiflora. I have not seen a non-select Dyckia rariflora so I don't know how it's different, maybe it's not reddish. A stoloniferous dyckia that make it easy in divide.

I don't know alot about this group of plants and I only have the 4 you see in the photo's below plus one Bigeneric that is not mine. Most I've only had a year or so and the only one large enough to flower is Angelita (Dylerium / Dyckia Encholirium Angelita) and I'm not to sure what it is.

Encholirium horridum doesn't produce any offset so you need to grow it from seed to get more. Encholirium Angelita does produce offsets and so does my Dyckia Chocolate. I don't know if any of the other Encholirium are like Encholirium horridum or Encholirium Angelita. If anyone know let me know.

I hate this tree. It is always dropping something. For the last few weeks it's flowers.

If the wind is blowing it will be leafs and or branches. Then after the flowers the seed pods. It's always something.

Cultivars are propagated not from seed, but rather vegetatively (e.g., via offsets).

Cultivars can be from species or hybrids.

Each cultivar is a version of a plant species that is not genetically different enough to be a separate species. For example, characteristics may include a different flower or leaf color, or height.

Dyckia estevesii the well known fan shaped plant may be a cultivar of a normal shaped dyckia.

The same would apply for hybrids.

Dyckia 'Silver King' is said to be a cultivar of Dyckia fosteriana
Dyckia 'Silver Queen' is said to be a cultivar of Dyckia fosteriana

Culture can play a part in the way a plant can look. We all seen a plant we may have that someone else may have but it looks different (and we buy it again).

Light, water, potting mix and fertilizer or no fertilizer can and will play a big part in the looks of the plant.

I get most of my plants from people (Tropiflora, Michael's. Rare plant auctions and sales at Bromeliad Shows) I believe know that they have and I believe that the tag reads.

From time to time I have put photo's on the web only to hear from a few people that say it can't be what my label reads because it does not look like their plant.

So what. I don't live in Singapore, Thailand, California or where ever. I live in Florida and my plants may look a little different.

Just my two cents and I may be all wrong.

I had seen this plant at Tropiflora and they have few of them but I have not seen any with offsets.

I guess the only way to tell the difference between Orthophytum leprosum and Orthophytum lemei is Orthophytum lemei has red bracts when it's in flower.

I got this Orthophytum at the rare plant auction with a note telling me that.

Now this plant I have had for some time now labeled as Orthophytum leprosum.

It does have the same color leafs but the leafs are not as fat. What could it be?

Maybe I need to water more.

I just potted up and divided Dyckia dawsonii as you can see in the photo's. I still have a few more to do.

This is one of those Dyckia that everyone who collects dyckia's should have. If you are going to do any hybridizing this would make a great plant to use if you want a thin leaf plant and it has nice color. Dyckia 'Brittle Star' is a hybrid of dawsonii X (fosteriana x platyphylla)

It seems to be a lot of Dyckia Arizona f2 hybrids around.

Most of which I like, most that I have seen look alike with dark leafs and white or almost white spines.
For me it would be hard to tell the difference between a lot of them. The real Dyckia Arizona would be hard to tell from the F3's. I like them all.
I don't have the real Dyckia Arizona but if you do I will trade you for one.

Encholirium subsecundum or is it? I got this plant at Michaels Bromeliad. He said it was seed from the BSI seed fund labeled as Encholirium subsecundum. But whet it flowered it look like a dyckia with lateral flower spike. What ever it is I like the big waxey leafs.

It may not be what the label reads but it got big fast. Just last year in was in a 6 inch pot whan I got it, moved to a 8 inch pot which it filled.

This a variegated Orthophytum maracasense and is that I call it but……..

I have seen this plant listed as Orthophytum maracasense striata.

Just today I found with a photo:

Dyckia 'Naked Lady'

Dyckia 'Naked Lady' (encholirioides X brevifolia ) or sometimes called Dyckia Nude Lady

I watch ebay for dyckia's like a lot of people do looking for plants I don't have. I notice that this just does not sell.

In the last 3 months it was listed 7 times but only sold once and the seller (it was not me) just got $7. during the same time, 255 dyckia's were listed with a Sell-Through of 71 %.

Dyckia Cherry Coke was listed 5 times with a Sell-Through of 100% and its way more common and got a lot more $. A large pot full got $90 at one time and $81 for about the same size plant at some other time. Can you believe it $90 and $81 for Dyckia Cherry Coke. what were those people thinking of

I don't why people don't like this dyckia, I think it's a very different kind of dyckia. Nice light green in color and no spines on the leafs but just a pointed leaf tip.

I have had Dyckia 'Naked Lady' for years getting larger and larger but not one flower on it. Now after years of growing it and moving up in pot size year after year it's going to flower.

The plant don't look its best as I have not cleaned up after this winter.

Did anyone ever have this dyckia flower and did it make good seed?

This last weekend I had gone to The Caloosahatchee Bromeliad Society Annual Auction. As always on the look out for any dyckia's I don't have or any plant I think is interesting.

I did manager to pay to much for 3 plants at the auction. They are:

I don't know anything about this plant but as you can see not all of the leaves are variegated. As it put out offsets some of the offsets will have more variegated leaves and some with no variegated leaves.

Just a little bit about this plant.
Orthophytum navioides is a small plant and flowers in the center that turns red.
Neoregelia wilsoniana is also a small plant that is stoloniferous.
So when this starts to produce offsets they will be on stolons, its going to look great.

I have two hechtia's that look almost alike. One get a little larger and has lavender flowers. The other does not get as big and has white flowers the leaves look the same.

Tropiflora on there web-site said "females have large white flowers and the males have larger, blue-purple flowers". So this may be what I have. But Tropiflora also said " Hechtia tillandsioides One of at least three species of Hechtia from Mexico that are maddeningly similar. With narrow, soft leaves that have tiny marginal spines, almost best describes as serrations, it grows in clumps of several plants with leaves up to 3 feet long, or longer. A mature clump can reach easily 3 feet high and wide. This plant, like other Hechtias, is dioecious and what is more, the male and female plants do not even look as though they are related. Throw in the similar species caerulea and lundelliorum and the whole is a nightmare".

So I for me its still up in the air what one of these plant are. The plant with blue-purple flowers is Hechtia tillandsioides and the other one may or may not be the same but a female Hechtia tillandsioides. Last year they both flowered at the same time and I put the two flowering plant next to each other in hope of getting some seed. Not one seed or any kind of seed pod came from it.

Today (1/6/11) I tock a look at YuccaDo web-site and they have a plant with lavender-blue flowers and they call it Hechtia caerulea.

They also have a plant called Hechtia lundelliorum that was previously listed as Hechtia tillandsioides they don't say why the name change.
