Gonatopus boivinii - Giraffe's Knees

Gonatopus boivinii or Giraffe's Knees, a native of tropical E. Africa.

The leaf often reaches 3 ½ feet in height and is marbled with blackish-brown markings.

The plant only produces one leaf from its tuber when in growth. This one is trying to make a 2nd tuber.

The leaf stalk is swollen about halfway up giving it the appearance of a giraffe's knee.

This is one of these plants that I did not buy and where it came from I don't know. This one I just dug out of the back yard and I have a few in the front yard what just came up also. A few years back I had one growing in a pot in my front yard that I sold on ebay, that was the first one that I know of. Where the other came from who knows? It is said to grow from leaf cutting as well.

This one is in the front Yard

Blooming Time: Late Spring. The single flower is 8 inches tall and the spadix is 3 inches long.

Amorphophallus paeoniifolius

Amorphophallus paeoniifolius in flower today (June 3 )

It is planted in the ground where it get some sun. It doesn't flower every year thank goodness.  I say thank goodness because of the smell of it. When in flower it's like dead Raccoon of some thing that big.

Water Lily

I have a small pond with no fish, just water and this Water Lily.

I had fish (Gold fish) a few years ago, but gave up on trying to keep them alive.

If it's birds trying to eat them or the pond plumping trying to kill them.
It was always some thing trying to do away with them.

Don't be afraid to leave a comment or a flike.

Sansevieria sambiranensis

I got it  from Out of Africa when they first started to sell them.

Some times it does OK  but then it goes backwards and loses more leaves then it makes.
I don't think I will ever see it flower.

If it is Sansevieria sambiranensis it should have red flowers.

Pseudobombax ellipticum

 or
some times it's called a shaving brush tree.

Flowering late winter or early spring with it's 5 inch flowers opening at night.

Leaves are first red turning green as they mature.

A winter deciduous tree and is drought tolerant, but does OK with our Florida rains.

It was getting to large so I cut it back last fall after it

dropped it's leaves. I've had this plant for about 30 some years.

You need two of them to get and seed. I only have one so no seed for me.

Tropiflora's 15th Spring Festival

I work at Tropiflora 2 weekends a year, the Spring and Fall sale Festival.
I job is just talk to people about plants.

The last few sales I say to my self I'm not going to buy any more plants, but that doesn't work.

Some time the plants they bring out I just have to bring home.
This sale I had to have a Navia arida  that was just $10 and then there was a Dyckia estevesii  looking plant for $4 now how can I pass on that?

There is a sausage tree that grows not far from where I live. Unfortunately the  sausages are never within reach.

There is also a tree (about 30 away) what has flowers that look like a Cannonball tree but the flower are up on is branches and not on it's truck. like a true Cannonball tree. The tree truck look like a  Ficus of some type with a  buttress roots.

I picked this flower off the ground and did not have my camera  with me.
