Hechtia sp. from W. Chilpancingo Guerrero

6/16/2010

Got this hechtia from Guy Wrinkle back in 6-16-2010

He said
Found only on grey weathered limestone in southern Oaxaca. The red color can be washed out with too much shade and or water. Shade and water helps in getting  Hechtias rooted but after this is accomplished give the plant more sun and less water to bring the color back out."

I have not seen any red so far. It gets full sun for some part of the day and I keep on the dry side.

Over Stock

It seem I have way more plants what I can't sell or gave away.

What to do with all the extra plants?

Well the only way I know of is to pitch, chuck, throw or just fling them out.

It's fall and winter is on it's way.
Then...........
Spring time starts with a new growing season with more plants to pot up, with some to keep and some to move out one more time.

The 1st on the list to pitch are the Hechtia's. No one wants a big bad plant that will draw blood just looking at it. I might keep a few but most are going.
Hechtia's
Next Deuterocohnia's I have few that are also to big and like Hechtia's they are also to "big bad plant that will draw blood just looking at it". The smaller Deuterocohnia's it seems I can't keep alive.

Deuterocohnia's
After that comes any plant I'm not all that happy with.
Maybe some Orthophytum, I have to many offsets on some.
Orthophytum

Some times you get a plant and it just doen't do what you hope it would do. So if I find any out they go.

Hechtia 90km

Hechtia 90km
This Hechtia comes from Oaxaca, Mexico. The 90 km means it was 90 kilometers from Oaxaca. I have had this plant for maybe 8 or 10 years now and it never flowered.

It grows slow. I have not re-moved any offsets or pup in all that time. Started with one but only the two plants after all that time.

Leaves are very succulent, very Stiff, and very spiny-toothed leaves are well armed with marginal spines.

Has wax like on the leaves with just a little red.

I just Divided a small clump of 2 so there is no roots.

Terrestrial bromeliad plants growing along side cactus and succulents on rocky slopes in deserts and other arid habitats.
They are Xerographic and survive long periods without water by slowing their growth rate. These plants are tough. Have a large root system, and generally need to be overpotted, remember that the larger the pot the larger the plant will grow.
Hechtias are dioecious, so a male plant and a female plant are needed to produce seeds.

Keep in Full sun to keep it looking it's best it will stay white with very little green.

Keep the plant well watered when they are actively growing. Cut back on the water during the winter when the temperatures are on the cool side
Grow in a well drained mix.

Hechtia glauca

This is a fat succulent leaf no spine (but are serrated) Hechtia, light green in color and I find it a slow grower. All the other hechtia's I have would cause pain and take blood from you if you got to close .

It seems to like being on the dry side so you have to be careful of not over watering and the soil mix also needs to dries faster. I have only had this plant for a few months, I hope it will do well come winter.
Well it over wintered Ok with just a little cold damage.

Hechtia caerulea and tillandsioides?

Hechtia caerulea is the top 2 photos

One of my favorite Hechtia's is caerulea and tillandsioides. Why? No spines to eat you. Hechtia caerulea has small lavender flowers and Hechtia tillandsioides small white flowers. They look the same until they come in to flower, Hechtia tillandsioides is a larger plant of the two. I could be wrong about the names of these two plants. I have seen the name Hechtia lindmanioides and purpusii also for these plants and also the differences may just be male and female plants. I an really confused about that they are. But I like them.
