A little infor. about Orthophytum's
Orthophytum comprises 41 or 56 species (number depends on who you believe), An Alphabetical List of Bromeliad Binomials has only 41 and 7 varieties ) and seven varieties forming two easily distinguished
groups: one with a well-developed scape, informally called
the scapose inflorescence complex  and
the other group referred to as the sessile inflorescence complex.

The latter is further subdivided into three subcomplexes:
“subcomplex amoenum,”
“subcomplex vagans”
“subcomplex supthutii”

Wish I could tell the difference between them or what they may look like.  Which one's do I have in the photo's?
If anyone has photos showing the difference send them and I'll post it here.

 xOrthotanthus is a  bigeneric hybrid 

It is a Cryptanthus microglazioui x Orthophytum navioides

A NEW RELEASE  at 2010 World Bromeliad Conference.

This is not the first time this cross has been done, but is the first time by Michael Kiehl,  Nat DeLeon and I think Steve Hoppin also did the same cross.

That’s what fcbs.org shows but with * by Steve Hoppin name,
have no idea why.

Nat DeLeon cross was named  xOrthotanthus 'Blazing Bonsai'
Steve Hoppin I don't know if he named it when he did.

Sorry I don't have a photo of it when it was at it's best.

But it turns bright red with a lime green center. The flowers
are large and white petals. The base of the plant is surprisingly fat.

UPDATE 12/14/10

Tropiflora now had this plant for sale and they say it is a Hummel hybrid of unknown parentage.
Maybe I miss seeing some thing.

xNeophytum 'Galactic Warrior'

This is xNeophytum 'Galactic Warrior' it's a cv. of xNeophytum 'Ralph Davis' . A great looking plant in or out of flower. For me it's not easy to grow. I have seen larger plants and I don't know how they do it with out it rotting.



Well any way this one had flowered for me this summer not as well as other plants I've seen but it still flowered.

If you look close you can see it has seed pods. This is the first time I have seen seeds on this or any Neoregelia, Orthophytum or any bromeliad with the exceptions of Dyckia and Tillandsia's.

Dyckia reitzii v. rubra

I was able to get Dyckia reitzii v. rubra the other day and it was not cheap.

But one day I hope it looks like the one below and make some offsets so I could get some of my money back.

Not the best looking plant but it is what it is.

This beauty, still uncommon, forms a large rosette, to over 12" across, with recurving, stiff, bronzy leaves that have really giant yellowish spines. ↑

The only Dyckia goehringii's I have are not the true Species but a plants from seed from the true Species.

What the father was I do not know but it look close to the true Species.

From the seed that came up they were labeled with letters.

Hechtia glauca

This is a fat succulent leaf no spine (but are serrated) Hechtia, light green in color and I find it a slow grower. All the other hechtia's I have would cause pain and take blood from you if you got to close .

It seems to like being on the dry side so you have to be careful of not over watering and the soil mix also needs to dries faster. I have only had this plant for a few months, I hope it will do well come winter.

Well it over wintered Ok with just a little cold damage.

Hechtia KM 85 was found 85 km from Mexico, Oaxaca. I have had this plant for about 6 or 8 years and this is the first time its flowering. Got it at an auction from Sarasota, Florida bromeliad show and sale and I think it came from Tropiflora

Anyone know what it is?

This coming weekend (April 16 - 18) is theSarasota Bromeliad Society show and sale.

I'm a member of this society and will be working / helping at the show.

Only showing 4 plants as I don't grow them for show only for me. They are are so hard to clean, as I have a tree that is always droping some thing on them.

xdyckcohnia bones mahogany is a monster of a plant. So far it is more then 3 feet across from leaf tip to leaf tip.

Doen't know how big it will get, it is the biggest of any of my succulent bromeliads. It never had any offsets or pups and only flowered one time a few years back.

I just got this plant and it has a story that comes with it. Below is from

It's not unusual for some species to circulate in cultivation for some years prior to being officially described from the wild. Some specimens escape botanists' attention entirely because the taxon in question cannot be relocated in habitat. In this situation, registering a cultivar name is desirable in this interim period as a temporary link for identification purposes. Only in exceptional cases such as Neoregelia 'Fireball' does this become a permanent solution.

In the late 1990s. Louisiana grower Terry Couthard raised a seedling batch of an unknown Dyckia from the BSI Seed Bank. One seedling matured enough to flower at an astounding 5 months old, but enquiries failed to positively identify it. This miniature matures at 10cms. diameter and pups easily, with a simple upright spike to 30cms. tall of yellow bell-like flowers . Several years later one learned suggestion was that it was a bigeneric, namely X Dylirium (Dyckia x Encholirium), but then Tropiflora Nursery in Sarasota, Florida announced that it had a uniform batch of self-set seedlings ready for release, which indicated this mystery plant was indeed a species which later proved breeds true to type .

In September, 2003 Terry Couthard registered this Dyckia as D. 'Angelita' until such time as it is botanically described. Brazilian botanist Rafaela Forzza decided two Dyckia species, D. biflorum and D. heloisae were better treated as Encholiriums in her 2001 Doctorate. This meant that all remaining Dyckia species had lateral flowering, a treatment nobody has challenged yet.

However, Dyckia 'Angelita' has terminal blooming spikes, so in March, 2009 (Uncle) Derek Butcher registered this distinctive "cultivar" as Encholirium 'Angelita', but there is a commentary link in the Bromeliad Cultivar Registry to the former name.

So what ever it is, I like it.

I think this one of the best looking hechtia's.

But I haven't seen them all.
