Orthophytum vagans

Orthophytum vagans

Was collected in Espirito Santo, Brazil.

Named vagans for its wandering habit. It was described in habitat Forming large mats on overhanging rocky areas.

This Orthophytum grows long and tall only to fall over. It produces multiple off-shoots from its base as well as flower head offsets.
This is one of the few bromeliads you can make cutting from.

There is also a Variegated form as far as I know it's just called Orthophytum vagans (albomarginated).

The only hybrids  I could find were:

Orthophytum 'Blaze' vagans x navioides
Orthophytum 'Blaze' vagans x navioides

Orthophytum ‘Copper Penny’ saxicola x  vagans

Aechmea, Hohenbergia and Neoregelia

Neoregelia hyb
This was a hyb. that  Ray Coleman did and didn't like that had Neoregelia carcharodon and I don't know what else.
I got it at one of Tropiflora sales a few years back then it was in a 6 inch pot. It had flowered once and produced the 3 offsets you see. They are way larger then it's mama.

Aechmea mexicana albo-marginata    is also a big plant that doesn't grow that fast.  It had flowered 2 years ago and put out 2 offsets.

Out of all the Hohenbergia I'v seen I still like Hohenbergia correia-araujoi the best.

This one also flowered a few years ago and put out that you see.

My little helper for the day was my granddaughter Leliah age 3

Dyckia linearifolia and Dyckia tapayuna

Dyckia linearifolia is in Alphabetical List of Bromeliad Binomials, 12th Edition, June 2010

Dyckia linearifolia
Love the color of this Dyckia and the very small spines.
But
Dyckia tapayuna is not listed in the Alphabetical List of Bromeliad Binomials, 12th Edition, June 2010
Dyckia tapayuna

Almost looks like the Dyckia above doesn't it? Has good color also and also small spines.

Anyone know anything about Dyckia tapayuna? Is it a good name? It is not in Alphabetical List of Bromeliad Binomials, 12th Edition, June 2010

Some one said on Facebook is named for the native indians that live in the area where it grows.
But is it a good name?

Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii

In the pass year I have been looking for Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii.

I've been fortunate, I not only been able to get 1 but 4 different clones.

It seems to be a very hard to come by plant. It's slow to grow and doesn't offset a lot, so far.

It's one of those Cryptanthus that need more of a dry condition to grow with full sun unlike most  Cryptanthus that would like it moist and in the shade .  I have been growing like a Dyckia.

The 4 different clones are:

Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii
Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii

Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii green form looks a little bigger with the longer leafs.
I'm thinking it's just a little older.
Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii green form
Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii silver form

 Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii wide leaf clone

If there was no tags on them I wouldn't know one from the other.

I haven't had them that long to get any offsets yet.

Ananas Mini Me

At the Banquet for the WBC we received a free plant. That plant was  Ananas Mini Me. I have not heard or seen that Ananas before. So I looked it up with Google and found what Tropiflora had this to say about Ananas Mini Me.

"A unique patented spineless miniature pineapple that grows to less than a foot across and matures in a 4 inch pot. Suitable for a windowsill or a desk top! Fruits will mature and turn yellow-orange with a sweet fragrance. A real conversation piece."

Over Stock

It seem I have way more plants what I can't sell or gave away.

What to do with all the extra plants?

Well the only way I know of is to pitch, chuck, throw or just fling them out.

It's fall and winter is on it's way.
Then...........
Spring time starts with a new growing season with more plants to pot up, with some to keep and some to move out one more time.

The 1st on the list to pitch are the Hechtia's. No one wants a big bad plant that will draw blood just looking at it. I might keep a few but most are going.
Hechtia's
Next Deuterocohnia's I have few that are also to big and like Hechtia's they are also to "big bad plant that will draw blood just looking at it". The smaller Deuterocohnia's it seems I can't keep alive.

Deuterocohnia's
After that comes any plant I'm not all that happy with.
Maybe some Orthophytum, I have to many offsets on some.
Orthophytum

Some times you get a plant and it just doen't do what you hope it would do. So if I find any out they go.

Orthophytum burle-marxii

I guess I have 2 types of Orthophytum burle-marxii or one might be a hyb. but which is a hyb. ?

Same plant as the one on top
This one made a offset (only one) on a Stolon.
The mother plant looks like it's done for.
The offset has not done much in a few weeks, seems to have stop growing. Crap!!!

Of the two this one had the best color. é

This one made offsets (so far 5) next to the mother plant.

WBC Rare Plant Auction

The WBC Rare Plant Auction only had a few plants that I had any interest in see photo's below.

Dyckia dawsonii x (Arizona x Brittle Star small)

Dyckia reitzii rubra x Snaggletooth

Enchotia Ruby

Navia arida
Did not win this but, I tried
Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii green form
  I won this one
Cryptanthus leopoldo-horstii silver form
 I won this one
Orthophytum zanonii
Did not win this but, I tried

Dyckia burle-marxii and Dyckia Dakota
I have Dyckia burle-marxii already and Dyckia Dakota was not that good of a clone.
Opening bit on Dyckia Dakota was if I remember correctly was $300 and no one bit on it. Was taken off the auction with no bits but came back for the 1st person who would bid $250, it sold but not to me.

Their was one other Orthophytum in the auction but I did take a photo of it because it didn't look like a Orthophytum.
I didn't look at all the tags of the auction plants and that Orthophytum I thought was a Neoregelia.
When it came up for auction I found out it was a Orthophytum. I was red with 2 pups on stolons, very cool looking. I messed up on that one.
